Announcing the Preliminary Launch of the Menander Redivivus Digital Archive
We are pleased to announce the preliminary launch of the digital archive Menander Redivivus: New Comedy on the Modern Stage, now accessible at https://menander.ouc.ac.cy
This open-access archive is the first digital resource dedicated to documenting and showcasing modern theatrical productions of Menander’s comedies from the 20th and 21st centuries. Aiming to fill a longstanding gap in the field of classical reception studies, Menander Redivivus collects, categorizes, and makes publicly available a wide range of materials related to the modern afterlife of the most influential playwright of Athenian New Comedy.
The archive currently focuses on Cyprus, Greece, and England, forming the foundation for future global expansion.
The platform currently includes:
- A detailed project description outlining the scope and aims of Menander Redivivus;
- A developing database of modern productions, represented through a collection tree, and continually updated with metadata, images, and performance documentation;
- Curated Bibliographic References and Selected Publications & Talks for teaching and research use;
- A selection of Digital Resources & Databases relevant to the modern reception of ancient drama;
- An interactive Timeline and Map showing the historical and geographical distribution of performances;
- A Vodcast section, featuring our original video series Menander Rocks!
- A regularly updated News/Blog area with announcements, updates, and collaboration opportunities;
- Links to the project's social media channels.
The archive is hosted by the Open University of Cyprus and funded by the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF).
We warmly invite researchers, theatre practitioners, and students to explore the archive and get in touch if they are interested in contributing material or collaborating with us.
