Menander Redivivus: New Comedy on the Modern Stage

Associate Professor Antonis Κ. Petrides and Dr. Kyriaki A. Ioannidou are excited to announce the initiation of a new research project, entitled Menander Redivivus: New Comedy on the Modern Stage. The project is being implemented by the Open University of Cyprus and funded by Ίδρυμα Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας/Research and Innovation Foundation.

The project aims to identify, collect, categorize, and make freely available online information and evidence of modern performances of Menander’s plays. We believe that by creating a dedicated online platform specializing in Menander’s Nachleben, we can shed light on his profound influence on theatre history.

The primary objectives of this project include:

  • Developing an open-access website and database that serves as the first dedicated platform for Menander’s works in modern theatre.
  • Encouraging engagement with classical texts (esp. fragments) and their modern adaptations among researchers, scholars, students, theatre practitioners, and the general public.
  • Providing a valuable educational tool for universities, drama schools, and high schools that currently do not include Menander in their curricula.

We invite you to engage with our project as we move forward. Your insights and thoughts would be invaluable in enriching our database and fostering a collaborative environment around the study of Menander. If you have any information and/or material related to (undocumented) productions of Menander around the world that you would like to share, please feel free to reach out.
We will keep you informed about the project’s progress. In the meantime, if you have any questions or suggestions regarding this initiative, please do not hesitate to contact us:
